Make the Most of the National Park Service’s Fee-Free Day
Take full advantage of the natural beauty around Harrisonburg this June on the National Park Service’s June Fee-Free Day.
National Fee-Free Day
On six different days each year, National Park Service sites that charge an entrance fee offer free admission to everyone! Beginning on January 15th (MLK Jr.’s birthday), other dates include April 20th (first day of National Park Week), June 19th (Juneteenth National Independence Day), August 4th (anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act), September 28th (National Public Lands Day), and November 11th (Veteran’s Day).
Shenandoah National Park
The first of Virginia’s national parks, Shenandoah contains a variety of flora and fauna over 300 square miles of Appalachian Mountain peaks. Shenandoah National Park is a haven for hikes, camping, and drives. Skyline Drive runs 105 miles through the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains with 75 overlooks connecting travelers to visitor centers, campgrounds, lodges, picnic areas, and most trailheads – making the entire park at least partially accessible by car. The park often has a fee that can be paid in any of the four entrances, but is free to the public during fee-free days!
George Washington and Jefferson National Forests
In 1995, the merging of two national forests gave rise to a vast expanse of natural beauty within the national forest system. Spanning an impressive 1,664,110 acres and stretching across regions of Virginia, Tennessee, and West Virginia, the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests provide visitors with unparalleled outdoor experiences. Offering a myriad of activities including hiking, paddling, cycling, camping, wildlife observation, fishing, and scenic drives, these forests boast over 2,300 miles of streams, 200 recreation sites for camping and picnics, and an extensive network of trails spanning over 2,200 miles.
